SCHOOL
OF GANDHIAN THOUGHT AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES
Introduction
The
School of Gandhian Thought and Development Studies
was set up in 1983 as one of the founding departments
of Mahatma Gandhi University. The Department
started the MA programme in Gandhian Studies
employing the services of part-time faculty
in 1984. The first three regular faculty members
joined the Department in 1987. Four more faculty
members joined the school in 1988 meeting the
stipulated strength of seven set by the UGC.
The University sanctioned an additional post
in 1990 taking the faculty strength to eight.
This makes the School the largest one of its
kind in India. The School of Gandhian Thought
and Development Studies has been selected by
the UGC for Special Assistance Programme (SAP)
for 2004-2009.

Achievements
of the School
In
1989 the School hosted the 12th annual session
of the Indian Society of Gandhian Studies, which
was a landmark in the history of the society.
In the mid-nineties the School started the M.Phil
programme as well as another MA in Social Welfare
and Rural Management, which was re-christened
as Development studies from 2002 admissions
onwards. So far the School has awarded forty-four
Ph.Ds. Roughly the same number of persons have
completed their M.Phil degrees. The School has
organized three UGC sponsored refresher courses
in Economics.
The
interdisciplinary nature of the faculty is a
key source of strength of the School. We have
experts in areas such as environmental and social
movements, Indian Philosophy, Social Work, Participatory
Planning and Panchayat Raj, Women’s Studies,
and Peace Studies including Conflict Resolution.
Most of the current faculty members are senior
hands with a teaching experience ranging between
17 and 35 years.
The
School has the rare distinction of having faculty
who have won highly competitive and prestigious
awards like Commonwealth Scholarship(UK), Commonwealth
Fellowship (UK), UGC Research Award, and Fulbright
Fellowship. The Sophia Award for best publication
for 2001 was awarded to one of our faculty.
Our faculty hold or served in positions like
member of Governing board of the Gandhi Peace
Foundation (New Delhi), UGC SAP Expert and Evaluation
committee in Social Work, Chairperson of UGC
Screening Committee of Major and Minor Research
Projects, Secretary and Vice-President of the
Indian Society of Gandhian Studies, and member
of the peace facilitation team that brought
about an interim settlement in the communal
conflict in Marad in Northern Kerala.
Most
of the graduates who pass out from the School
have found employment. The largest contingent
of Gandhian Studies graduates have been absorbed
as teachers at the Higher Secondary level following
its introduction as a subject of study at that
level by the government of Kerala. Many students
of the MA programme in Development Studies are
recruited by the voluntary sector.
The
School has an excellent record of publications.
Apart from 20 books, 24 chapters have been published
by the faculty in edited works. The total number
of publications in Journals comes to 129. They
have appeared in a variety of social science
journals. The list includes Economic and Political
Weekly(2 special articles, one lead), Indian
